Want to grow your own avocado tree at home? All you need is a glass of water, a bit of patience, and the pit from an avocado.
It’s a fun and rewarding DIY project that even beginners can try.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to sprouting an avocado seed and growing it into a healthy little tree.
1. Prepare the pit
After enjoying your avocado, gently clean the pit under water without removing its brown skin. This protective layer helps it stay moist and healthy during germination.
2. Start the sprouting process
Insert three toothpicks around the middle of the pit and suspend it over a glass of water. Make sure the pointy end faces up and the bottom touches the water. Place it in a warm, bright area.
3. Be patient
Wait 4 to 8 weeks. Eventually, the seed will crack open, and you’ll see roots growing downward and a stem sprouting upward. Change the water regularly to keep it clean.
4. Pot your plant
Once the roots are strong and the stem is about 15 cm (6 inches) tall, it’s time to plant the seed in soil. Use a pot with good drainage and leave the top part of the pit exposed.
5. Take care of your young avocado tree
Place the pot in a sunny spot, water regularly, and pinch or prune the stem once it reaches around 30 cm (12 inches) to encourage branching. You now have your own avocado plant!
Growing an avocado tree from a pit won’t give you fruit overnight—but it’s a great way to connect with nature and add some green to your home!
